What are we trying to achieve?

Ensure stainless steel tanks, tables, and equipment are sterile, passivated, and visually pristine.

Improper wiping leaves streaks that harbor bacteria, or uses abrasive materials that damage the protective chromium oxide layer.

Types of Contamination

Fingerprints Cleaning chemical residue Water spots Bio-film Food/Pharma residue

Critical Requirements

Non-Abrasive

Will not scratch the surface finish, preserving passivity.

Chemical Inertness

Compatible with aggressive sanitizers like Quat or Bleach.

Low Lint

Leaves no fibers that could contaminate the next batch.

Standard Cleaning Procedure

STEP 1

Clean

Apply detergent and wipe to remove bulk soils and organic matter.

STEP 2

Rinse

Wipe with DI water to remove detergent residue.

STEP 3

Sanitize

Apply approved sanitizer and allow appropriate dwell time.

STEP 4

Polish (Optional)

Wipe with the grain using a dry lint-free cloth to remove water spots.

Best Practices

  • Always wipe WITH the grain
  • Use specific wipes for sanitizing vs polishing
  • Ensure complete solvent evaporation

Avoid These Mistakes

  • Wiping in circles
  • Using abrasive pads (destroys passivation)
  • Leaving standing water
